About the team

A robotics team, run entirely by students

MMU Cybertron is the robotics team of Multimedia University, Cyberjaya. We build the robots that represent MMU at Robocon — designed, machined, wired and programmed by undergraduates, rebuilt every season around a new game.

What we are for

Robocon gives us a hard problem with a fixed deadline and a public scoreboard. That is the whole point.

Members join knowing nothing about robots and leave having shipped one. The team exists to give MMU students the engineering experience a syllabus cannot: designing something that has to work in front of a crowd, on a day you do not get to choose.

Timeline

Season by season

  1. 2025

    ROBOCON 2025

The team runs internal training workshops and enters ARC at Universiti Malaya, rebuilding depth across all four sub-teams.

Gaps in this timeline are gaps in our records, not in our history. If you were on the team in a year that is missing, tell us about it.

Sub-teams

Four disciplines, one robot

01

Mechanical

Mechanical designs every moving part of the robot — drivetrain, arms, grippers, launchers, chassis — then builds it and rebuilds it after it breaks. Work starts in CAD, moves to the workshop for laser cutting, 3D printing and machining, and ends with the unglamorous part: making a mechanism repeatable enough to survive a whole match day.

Tools and skills

  • CAD (SolidWorks / Fusion 360)
  • Machining and fabrication
  • 3D printing
  • Tolerancing and fits

What you will learn

  • Designing for manufacture, not just for render
  • Drivetrain and transmission selection
  • Rapid iteration under a competition deadline

02

Electrical

Electrical handles everything between the battery and the motor: power distribution, motor drivers, microcontroller boards, sensor selection and the wiring harness. On competition day this sub-team is the difference between a robot that runs five matches and one that browns out in the second.

Tools and skills

  • Circuit design and PCB layout
  • Soldering and harness building
  • Motor drivers and power budgeting
  • Sensor integration (encoders, IMU, LiDAR)

What you will learn

  • Reading a datasheet and trusting it
  • Debugging with a multimeter and an oscilloscope
  • Building electronics that survive vibration and impact

03

Programming

Programming writes the firmware and the control software — motion control, odometry, path planning, autonomous sequences and the manual driver interface. A Robocon match is three minutes long, so every routine has to be fast, deterministic and recoverable when the field is not where the robot thought it was.

Tools and skills

  • C / C++ on microcontrollers (STM32, Arduino)
  • PID and motion control
  • Odometry and path planning
  • Python for tooling and simulation

What you will learn

  • Writing real-time code that cannot be allowed to block
  • Tuning a control loop on real hardware
  • Version control and code review in a team

04

Media & Marketing

Media & Marketing runs sponsorship outreach, the social accounts, this website, and the photo and video record of every build and competition. It is also the sub-team that keeps the team funded — components, machining and travel are paid for by proposals this group writes. You do not need to touch a robot to be essential to one.

Tools and skills

  • Photography and video editing
  • Graphic design
  • Proposal and copywriting
  • Event and social media planning

What you will learn

  • Pitching to industry sponsors
  • Building a brand that outlives one committee
  • Documenting engineering work so juniors can learn from it

Committee

Who is running the team this session

The committee list goes up once every member listed has given consent to publish their name and photo. Until then, reach the team at admin@mmucybertron.com.

Faculty advisors

Our thanks to the Faculty of Engineering staff who supervise the team, sign off on workshop access, and back us at every competition.

Intake closed

The next intake opens soon.

We recruit around September 2026 each year. Follow us on Instagram and you will see the call before anyone else.
